One of the best things about being outdoors is relaxing on pillows and cushions. Of course, one day these will become dirty. Here are the steps on how to keep your pillows and cushions looking fresh and new all year long.
Steps to Clean Pillows and Cushions
While many outdoor pillows and cushions are equipped with removable covers you can remove and wash, others don’t have this feature. This means you’ll have to wash the cushions by hand. Rather than lay these on a dirty surface, place cushions on a deck or patio to clean.
What You’ll Need:
- Dish detergent
- Garden hose
- Vacuum with upholstery attachment
- Soft-bristled brush
- Clean towel
- Bucket of water
- Borax

Step 1: Remove debris with a vacuum.
Firstly, use the upholstery attachment to vacuum the cushion’s surface. Watch for loose debris hiding near crevices. Be careful not to damage decorative elements such as buttons. Alternatively, try a soft-bristled brush.
Step 2: Wash with soap and water.
Next, fill a bucket with water, and add 1/4 cup Borax and 1 Tbsp dish detergent. After mixing, dip a brush inside and use it to scrub the cushion’s surface. Be sure to go back over stains as needed. Allow this to soak for five minutes or longer.
Step 3: Use a garden hose to rinse.
A pressure washer might damage the cushions. Therefore, turn a garden hose on medium-high pressure. Now you can rinse all of the soap off.
Step 4: Allow cushions to air-dry.
Finally, use your hands to squeeze excess water out. Soak up moisture with a clean towel by blotting the fabric. Set cushions vertically in a sunny spot for speedier air drying.
Natural Cleaning Method with Vinegar

After you’ve vacuumed the cushions, to make a natural cleaner, pour 4 cups warm water and 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar into a spray bottle. Next, spray the surface and leave for 15 minutes. If stains exist, scrub with a soft brush. Lastly, rinse the vinegar mixture off and allow it to air dry.
